A wayside shrine full of history: the Stoana Maschta

There is hardly anyone in Oberndorf who has got to experience so much as the so-called Stoana Maschta (stone mast). Erected in 1484, the granite column has not only stood in various places in our village, but also witnessed the heyday of ore mining, the plague, the Tyrolean Rebellion of 1809, the industrial revolution and two world wars – and even that is to mention only a fraction of the history of the past 500 years.

Originally, the Stoana Maschta was a traditional signpost that stood in the centre of the village. The directions in which it once pointed can still be read today (below the images of the saints): "Gotsner" stood for the Wiesenschwang district, where the Götschner farm was located. "Elmau" stands for today's Ellmau, and, likewise, "Kitzpichl" for Kitzbühel. The number above "Kitzpichl" is the year the column was erected: 1484.

Flagge England “Stoana Mascht“

I'm made of stone and look very immobile, but, believe me, I've seen more here in Oberndorf than many others. But first I want to introduce myself: the people here call me "Stoana Mascht", a local term here in Tyrol that means "stone mast". Oberndorf has been my home for over 500 years – that's a really long time. I have seen how mining was practised here in the region for the first time, and how Oberndorf became a centre for copper and silver. I was there when there were terrible wars and when diseases plagued the people here.

And because so many different events have happened, I always had different functions and I didn't always stand here in this spot. At the very beginning, more than 500 years ago, I was placed in what was then the centre of Oberndorf. I served as a guide and signpost for the people, and you can still see the remains of that today. Below the colourful pictures, for example, you will see the word "Kitzpichl" – that's how the name of our neighbouring town Kitzbühel was spelled back then. You will also see the word "Elmau", which stands for another village very close by, called "Ellmau". "Gotsner" was the word people used for a farmer back then, and I also showed him the way. And the number 1484, which you will also be able to see, is the year in which I was built.

The meaning of what is on the fourth side has not been clarified. The number 1623 may possibly stand for the time of the plague and point to a separate plague cemetery outside the village. This is because over the centuries the signpost is likely to have taken on the function of a plague column, a boundary stone with holes for securing wheel frames or directing the way, and – for economic reasons – a wayside shrine. For example, it once also stood in a place where miners had drowned – in the mining gallery below – after water had broken in.

Flagge England In addition to my life as a signpost, I also got given other duties over time: I was part of a large gate and reminded people of the victims of the plague and other terrible misfortunes. The people positioned me depending on where I was needed.

Up until 1977, the Stoana Maschta was located in the district of Eberhartling, north of the village centre. Ever since then it has been here in the village square, and Walter Honeder has added images of four saints. What was originally to be seen on those parts has unfortunately not been passed down in any records. Walter Honeder dedicated these four sides to Saint Leonhard, the patron saint of farm animals, Saint Barbara, as the patron saint of miners, John the Baptist, and the apostles Philip and James the Great, to whom Oberndorf's parish church is consecrated.

Flagge England I have been standing here, in what is now the centre of Oberndorf, for around 40 years. People haven't used me as a signpost for a long time. The four colourful pictures that I was decorated with in 1977 make me what you call a wayside shrine today. You will see different saints, each of them with a specific task: there is Saint Leonhard, who is supposed to protect the cows, sheep and chickens. Saint Barbara takes care of everyone who works in a mine. Then there is also a picture of John the Baptist on me, which you can see, and the two apostles Philip and James, to whom our great church is consecrated. That means it was built in their honour.
